Bagel Recipe
These bagels are wonderfully chewy on the inside with a crisp, shiny crust on the outside. They're perfect when toasted with cream cheese or topped with your favourite spreads.
Ingredients
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon instant yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
1 tablespoon baking soda (for boiling)
1 egg (for egg wash)
Toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Gradually add warm water and mix until a dough forms.
Knead: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour until doubled.
Shape the Bagels: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center and gently stretch it to form a bagel shape.
Boil: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda. Boil bagels in batches for about 1-2 minutes on each side, then transfer to a baking sheet.
Add Toppings: Brush each bagel with beaten egg and sprinkle your desired toppings on top.
Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown, then cool on a wire rack.
