Tortilla Recipe

These homemade tortillas are soft, warm, and incredibly versatile. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create the perfect base for your favourite fillings. They're slightly chewy with a hint of nuttiness from the flour, making them a delightful addition to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or lard

  • 3/4 cup warm water

  • Extra flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix well.

  2. Add Fat: Stir in the vegetable oil or lard until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. Add Water: Slowly add warm water, mixing until a dough forms. Knead for a few minutes until smooth.

  4. Rest the Dough: Cover the dough with a towel and let it rest for 15-30 minutes.

  5. Divide and Roll: Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten into a circle about 1/8 inch thick.

  6. Cook the Tortillas: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30-60 seconds on each side, until lightly browned and cooked through.

  7. Keep Warm: Stack the cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm while you cook the rest.
